6 RV Camping Essentials Nobody Tells You About

After spending four weeks camping in my small camper—basically living in it—I was reminded that some of the best RV camping essentials are not the obvious items found on every checklist.

Of course, every RVer needs the basics, such as water hoses, sewer supplies, leveling gear, and electrical equipment. But those were not the things I appreciated most during my four-week trip. The RV gear I valued most solved the same irritating little problems over and over again.

They helped me sleep better, made awkward camper chores easier, eliminated the daily hunt for my keys, kept me connected without cell service, prevented black-tank odors, and remembered campsite details I would eventually forget.

These are my six less-obvious RV must-haves—and why each one has made everyday camping life noticeably better for me.

1. Froli Sleep System and an RV Mattress: My Magical Sleeping Combination

I use the app to record every campground and camping spot I visit. I can save the campsite number, available hookups, cell-service quality, personal ratings, photos, and other details I want to remember.

One of my favorite features is the ability to record desirable campsites. When I walk through a campground and spot a beautiful waterfront site—or one that would be much easier to back into—I add it to the app.

Apparently, I am now the person who snoops around everyone else’s campsite in the name of research.

When I return a year or two later, I already know which sites I want to reserve. I do not have to gamble on an unfamiliar site when I have already done the important research.

I also save photos because I always believe I will remember what a campground looked like. After enough trips, however, campground names, site numbers, and layouts begin blending together.

Now the app remembers those details for me. At my age, any app willing to solve the same memory problem every time I plan another camping trip is handling a job I am very happy to hand over.
